I discovered YNAB back in October. I was unemployed and have never really been great about setting up a budget or tracking my spending.
I dove right in and read everything, watched all the videos, participated on this subreddit, etc. I really feel like I know the software inside and out and I really enjoy using it.
I got a job finally in February that pays enough to cover living expenses and allows me to slowly pay off debt. I only make about $1500 a month right now. I'm spending almost a 3rd of my income on these two categories. The red bar is eating out. The orange bar is alcohol. Notice my spending in these categories took a big dip in January? I had literally no money.
I got the job right in the nick of time. Things could have gotten real bad for me. As soon as I started making money, I continued my old bad habits. The only difference YNAB made was I knew exactly how stupid I was being instead of only having a general idea, and I knew when to stop so I didn't put myself over the edge.
I've been skirting the edge for months now. There has been a downward trend in my poor spending choices the past few months and I am in a pretty good mindset to continue that, but I have to be relentless with myself. All it takes is one night of weakness to go out and blow over $100 at the bar. The point is, when I started YNAB I thought it was going to solve my problems.
I read all the success stories and thought 'If only I knew exactly where my money was going, if I'm more aware, I'll make better decisions.' This obviously isn't the case. If you have spending problems, it's not because you don't have a budget. It's because you have bad habits you need to break. Starting YNAB is the perfect first step because awareness is crucial, but it's only the first step and it's probably the easiest.
I actually enjoy using it. I don't enjoy cutting my spending where it needs to be cut. That's step two and it's the most difficult. Edit: I don't think I really need any advice. It's pretty obvious what I need to do personally.
I'm mostly just letting myself serve as a warning to others who think YNAB is going to be a magic pill. You need to be prepared to make changes in your life. YNAB will highlight what those changes are exactly. Perhaps and can help at this point?? I have used YNAB religiously since the start of the year, and my problem is just plain old not enough money.
Even is only of so much help. And my kids all have sensory issues with food, so its not a matter of filling them up on rice and beans!! Having said that it HAS been helpful to see where we can cut back a bit and as a result we've had a couple of nasty bills that we could meet; but our biggest spend is on groceries and I just can't see any way of trimming it back more than we have. I'll keep working on it. With a picky eater, you can say to them 'Until you eat this, you're not getting anything else' and they will eventually eat it. My kids will starve first:( They have autism and sensory issues with food is one of the problems they face. They're not doing too badly.
This year we've got them eating bolognaise sauce with their spaghetti, so we can sneak in some veggies that way. One of my youngest's classmates at the Early Intervention Centre eats nothing but crumbed cheese sausages. Another little boy at the school used to eat nothing but plain rice crackers, but now also eats one particular brand of friend rice. With picky eaters, it tends to be taste or texture that puts them off. With sensory issues, it can be the colour of the food as well - so my youngest two would only eat beige foods (pasta, bread, cereal, bananas) before we started working with the OT. Autistic kids also tend to have digestive issues as well - but that's a whole wall of text by itself. It means that some foods may set them off because the food actually hurts them.
I just simply wouldn't call them. My issue with food is that I sometimes don't give myself enough time to prepare my meals, so I'll go to work and not have anything to eat. I'll have to eat out for lunch. With alcohol, when I decide to drink, I've decided to drink. I'm not going to call somebody who will convince me not to because I actually want to drink and I know they might talk me out of it.
I'm sure it's hard to understand for someone if they're not an addict. I know I'm an alcoholic, but it's not just about the alcohol. If it was, I could just get a bottle and drink at home pretty cheaply. It's about going out.
It's boredom, which I think is the reason a lot of people spend money when they shouldn't no matter what they're spending it on. Spending itself can be an addiction. Is alcoholic the right word there? Sorry if it is but it does kind of sound like it isn't.
When I was reading about the software earlier today and looking at their magic rules and things I did remark to myself how they play up how easy it is to start sorting out your finances, a 'magic pill' as you put it. I think anything of this sort will take a bit of willpower and an actual desire to start saving money. That said, it does look like once you have that will power then this is the best way forward from there.
My bank account is crying out of mercy so I'm gonna give it a try and I'll come back and post my story in a few months. Alcoholism is rarely on its own. It's typically a symptom of other issues that just makes things worse.
It sounds like you're a bit depressed, perhaps, though not necessarily like clinically - just not at a super happy point in your life. It's HUGE that you're budgeting and being as open and honest about your problems. You should seriously consider some form of support - try a few things and find what works for you.
AA isn't the only option, and ceasing all drinking completely isn't necessarily the only option, though it often is for many of us with addiction and impulse control issues. Keep working on yourself the way you are and life will get better and it will be easier not to rely on going to the bar to tame boredom and loneliness. Plus, you'll have more energy for cooking etc.
You're headed in the right direction. If your experience is anything like mine, you'll look back in a couple years and feel really good about how the positive choices you've started making snowballed and changed your life. Best of luck. It sounds like you're a bit depressed, perhaps, though not necessarily like clinically - just not at a super happy point in your life. I know it's not solely alcoholism because alcohol isn't the driving force. It just happens to be the way I choose to distract myself.
It's been about a year and a half of getting out of bed at noon and browsing reddit all day in my spare time. Some form of depression for sure, though nothing as serious as suicidal thoughts or despair about the future. Just simply allowed myself to sink into horrible habits after some traumatic life experiences. These experiences aren't the initial problem though, as I've had pretty bad habits my whole life, but just recently allowed them to get out of control. I've really gotten back to the basics and have created new habits like religiously budgeting with YNAB, cooking my meals every day, and going to the gym constantly. I actually don't plan on cutting alcohol out completely just yet.
It's great to hear from somebody that had a similar experience and got over it. Sometimes it can feel like this is just who I am now. I refuse to let that happen. Dude, you could totally be me like 3 years ago. Inertia and never really learning discipline and good habits growing up is hard to get past. I think it will always be a struggle, but it's definitely something you can learn as an adult.
You're doing all the right things. My only advice would be to be relentless, but also gentle with yourself. If you stop going to they gym or budgeting or cooking for a week or even six months, forgive yourself and start again. Punishing yourself won't help. Always move forward. Overall, yeah.
Once I stopped worrying about overdrawing my account, got in decent shape again, got a healthy happy relationship, found a good paid internship after 6 months of desperate searching for a job, and finally got my credit score up after 5 years, I started to really feel like I have my shit together. I still fuck up, of course, but once you start building a better life, you have more cushion make it not so bad. I haven't worked out in almost two weeks, and I spent way too much on eating out last month, but I let it go and do better today. That's all we can ever do, really.
Crawl, walk, run. Crawl, walk, run.
Always feel free t.
